Strong Kin reflects a model of care that strengthens families, honours Aboriginal ways of caring for children, and promotes self-determination. Strong Kin is a voluntary in home family preservation service that supports Aboriginal families to keep children safe and families together . The program works alongside families to build on existing strengths, preserve cultural identity, and ensure children can remain safe, connected, and supported within their family, community, and culture wherever possible.
Strong Kin supports Aboriginal families with children aged 0–17 years who are experiencing challenges that may impact their children's safety, wellbeing and stability.
The program provides intensive, family-led support for up to 12 months, helping families strengthen parenting, improve child safety, and reduce the risk of children entering out-of-home care.
Support is tailored to each family's unique strengths, goals and cultural needs. Using a whole-of-family approach, we work alongside families to build resilience, strengthen connections to culture and community, and create safer, stronger futures for children.
Families are supported by their allocated Caseworker, who works alongside them to provide tailored, family-led casework support based on their identified goals and needs.
Families are also offered opportunities to engage in cultural mentoring, cultural activities, and connections to community to strengthen identity, belonging, and wellbeing.
Strong Spirit uses a collaborative approach, with Caseworkers working alongside the family, cultural mentors, community supports, and other relevant services to ensure coordinated, holistic, and culturally safe support that builds on each family's strengths.
